Back to School 2025: Hays CISD Welcomes Over 25,000 Students This August

It’s almost time to sharpen those pencils and pack the backpacks — a record-breaking 25,000+ students will be walking through Hays CISD doors on August 13 for the 2025-26 school year.

This milestone marks the first time the district has surpassed the 25,000-student enrollment mark, reflecting the incredible growth in communities like Buda, Kyle, and South Austin.

📵 New State-Mandated Phone Policy

This year, students will see a major change to their daily routine. House Bill 1481 requires all Texas public schools to restrict the use of personal communication devices during the school day — including lunch and passing periods.

Prohibited Devices Include:

  • Cellphones & telephones

  • Earbuds & earphones

  • Tablets, laptops & smartwatches

  • Gaming devices, radios, and pagers

  • Smart glasses

  • Any device capable of digital communication

While students may bring devices to campus, they must be stored away during the day. Violations will result in disciplinary action.

Why This Matters for Local Families

With Hays CISD’s rapid growth, families in Buda, Kyle, and South Austin are seeing expanded educational opportunities — but also new policies that will shape the student experience. Whether you’re a long-time resident or new to the area, keeping up with school schedules, transportation changes, and district policies is key to a smooth start.
