Hays County Approves New Plan to Prepare for

Floods, Storms, and Severe Weather

If you’ve lived in Central Texas for long, you know how unpredictable the weather can be. From severe hailstorms to flash floods, our area has seen more than its share of natural disasters over the years. That’s why Hays County has officially approved its 2025 Multi-Jurisdiction Hazard Mitigation Plan, a proactive step toward keeping our communities safe in the face of future weather events.

As a real estate professional serving Buda, Kyle, and the surrounding areas, I know firsthand how much home and property owners care about protecting their investments and their families. It’s not just about buying or selling a home—it’s about making sure your community is prepared for whatever Mother Nature brings.

🚨 What’s in the 2025 Hazard Mitigation Plan?

The new Hays County Mitigation Plan is designed to help reduce the impact of floods, storms, droughts, and other severe weather. The plan includes input from multiple cities and organizations, including:

  • Buda, Kyle, San Marcos, Dripping Springs, Wimberley, and other local governments

  • Hays County officials

  • Hays, San Marcos, Dripping Springs, and Wimberley ISDs

  • Texas State University

The top goals of the plan include:

  • Protecting lives, property, and local economies

  • Reinforcing infrastructure like critical buildings and low-water crossings

  • Purchasing backup emergency power generators for key public facilities

  • Improving flood alert systems and weather monitoring

  • Offering voluntary buyouts for at-risk properties in areas like Buda

  • Exploring flood insurance discounts for homeowners

🌍 Why This Matters

Hays County’s population continues to grow, with new developments and more people calling this area home each year. Unfortunately, growth can also mean increased risk when it comes to natural disasters. Between 1997 and 2023, floods in the county caused over $224 million in property damage, along with 15 tragic fatalities and 175 injuries. Hailstorms were the second most damaging, costing over $100 million in property losses.

With severe weather events becoming more common due to climate change, local leaders are taking steps now to protect our communities in the future.

🏡 What This Means for Homeowners

As a homeowner in Buda, Kyle, or the greater Hays County area, staying informed about hazard mitigation plans is important. These plans can affect:

  • Home insurance policies and flood zone maps

  • Local infrastructure improvements and road safety

  • Your ability to qualify for disaster relief or grants

  • The long-term value and safety of your property

If you’re considering buying or selling in the area—or if you simply want to know more about how to protect your home—I’m always happy to help you navigate your options.

Let’s Talk About Your Real Estate Needs
